Get a copy of a certificate

Vital Records issues and maintains certificates or records of all birth, death, marriage, divorce, and adoptions completed in Utah. 

  • Birth certificates are available from 1905–present. Records are public after 100 years
  • Death certificates are available from 1905–present. Records are public after 50 years 
  • Marriage certificates are available from 1978–2010. Records are public after 75 years
  • Divorce records are available from 1978–2010. Records are public after 75 years
    • Visit or call the Utah District Courts in the district where the divorce was finalized for the years before 1978 or after 2010

    How to order a certificate

  1. Review your eligibility


    Certificates can be requested by:

    • The person of record
    • An immediate family member
    • A legal guardian
    • A designated legal representative

     

    Requirements for proof of relationship:

    • Immediate family members must provide proof of relationship, such as:
      • Siblings: Vital certificates with common parents
      • Spouses: Marriage records
      • Parents or grandparents: Birth certificates
    • Legal guardians may be asked to present a court order of guardianship appointment.
    • Legal representatives must provide a letter of legal need from the entity requiring the vital record.
